4 Tips to choose the right design studio for Architecture Students

Architecture course in India is now a growing demand. In a single year, a lot of architects are passing out of their college with a professional degree. As the trend is changing, most of the architects choose to establish a design than going for higher studies. Now. How do you think you can find a perfect place to do internship and how will you make your portfolio?

1. Make a portfolio

By the middle of your previous semester of internship, you have to have a portfolio with you. You should make sure your portfolio looks elegant and simple. Check out how to make a portfolio from here.

2. Find your interest.

There are a lot of design studios in India who provides different kinds of services. Some studios design high rise buildings, some of them plan cities, some of the take residential projects, some of them do only sustainable architecture. So out of these, you have your option. Work had and create a point for explaining the reasons why you chose such a type of firm.

3. What scale of project do you wish to do?

If you want to do bigger scale projects, try joining big and established firms. For example, Hafeez Contractor owned firm takes only big and high rise projects. You will get to do a lot of service and allied drawings. Stapati is another established firm in Kerala which takes big projects to work on.

If you join big firms, you will certainly have value added to your work experience. but the works you get need not satisfy your syllabus. You university syllabus prescribes certain criteria for your college to mark based on your experience and make sure you get it all done. I prefer smaller firms which takes lesser works and also number of employees are less. Being in a small firm, you can easily establish good relationship with fellow designers and also make sure you have completed your requirements.

4.Approach them with your portfolio and creative mail.

Make sure you have shortlisted at least minimum 20 firms. Now the question is, when will you start sending your portfolio? The answer is, start sending your portfolio before at least two months in advance. and this is not necessarily important either. Some firms just go through the portfolios just before they start their intakes.

Do not send them your portfolio in to so many mails as 'bcc'. It will probably go into their spam folder. You have to send each of your desired firms individually. Schedule your mail to morning 9am because your mail has to come on tom when the design firm is checking their mail right? You should also make sure you contact them personally by phone to ensure the firm has gone through your portfolio (This is how your first impression is created)

Bonus tip: You may find it difficult to upload your portfolio individually to all the mails you are sending. All you got to do is upload your portfolio to a Google drive folder named 'Portfolio' and share the link of this folder. So that you can still edit the portfolio even after you sent it to the firms.

That's it! Now go and find some good studios to work at. I recommend you to avoid metro cities in case you are low on economy. Good luck!

The Benefits of Outdoor Activities for Health and Wellbeing

In our fast-paced modern lives, the rhythms of nature often seem distant, drowned out by the hum of technology, deadlines, and routines. Yet, there exists a quiet wisdom in the outdoors, a kind of ancient knowledge that speaks not through words, but through the subtle language of the wind, the rustle of leaves, and the soft lapping of water against the shore. The benefits of outdoor activities on health and wellbeing extend far beyond the physical realm; they touch upon the spiritual and psychological, helping us reconnect with both the world around us and the world within. The philosopher Henry David Thoreau, who famously retreated to the woods to live deliberately, once wrote, "I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life." This deliberate confrontation with nature, this immersion in the outdoors, forces us to slow down, to become more present, and to awaken to the deeper truths about our own existence. It is in these ...

Design Concept

Design Concept Being a student architect, everyone including me has done the conceptual level of design wrong. Concept can be taken from anything found anywhere. It could be physically something, or a smell, or a color, or a text, or place, or even an animal. There is no prescribed source for thinking of a concept. The process of thinking and working out a concept into a design is the very important matter that highlights the design in which you are working.  A design concept is the very basic idea and the foundation of a design from which design developments happens throughout a period of time. After you have collected and compiled data for your project, you have to work these data through the concept of your choice.  I have seen many people developing designs based on an element and use them directly as it is. For example, someone says, my concept is the fruit called Banana and this person tend to build a building in the shape of a Banana. Not that this design had seen a bad...

Design workspace is never conventional

Design workspace is never conventional I would love to compare the present Indian architecture to a typical romantic Indian film in which there is a hero, villian, the hero goes behind the heroine, the villian conduct occasional attack, the hero defeats the villian in the climax. There are couple of fight sequence, song and dance, and almost every Indian cinema is predictable today! Earlier, the audience never felt boring about the film quality, but they enjoyed the humors and lame jokes inside the film. But today's audience can not really love such film anymore. They need more practical and naturalistic elements. The space in which I have learnt designing was just a typical array of lintels and beams with regular typical arrangement of doors and windows. I do not really want to think the designer/engineer had really known the users inside, because from my personal experience, it is horrible. Just like Indian cinema, these spaces inside my college are just a typical space which can...
